Western Legends was my Game of the Year for 2019...A year after it was released. It has remained in heavy rotation with my game groups since I picked it up. During that time, I've managed to pick up a few expansions for it (and I do mean managed, if you aren't crowdfunding some Western Legends release, you never know how, if, or when they will be available). A Fistful of Extras was the first that I picked up and remains one of my favorites. Allow me to deep dive into it and give you an inventory of everything that is included

Let's start with the miniatures- Six new minis are included. Now before you get all excited and start deciding which one you want to use as your character in your next game, let me tell you that they are used in conjunction with the six bandit cards and the one sticker sheet. The miniatures represent new, named Bandits: Gambler, Desperado, Fugitive, Robber, Horse Thief and Bandido (That is Western Legends' spelling, I prefer The Refreshments' spelling of Bandito), Once you sticker the base of the miniatures with the included sticker sheet, they become that bandit. So, when you move into a location with a Bandit, you'll check the number on the base, pull one of the new bandit cards and read that Bandit's Entry.

The effects can range from an additional challenge for this encounter, an special benefit from defeating them or it just might be a line of dialogue to enhance the encounter. While I'm not opposed to the simple quote from a bandit when you throw down with them, it feels like a missed opportunity that their aren't more quotable lines from the last century of Western Films thrown in. You know what, forget what I said earlier, if you really dig one of the new Bandit miniatures, feel free to swap it with one of the default minis from the base game. Life's too short for ugly cowboys and slow horses.

 Two new poker cards are also included and they are both Jokers. With the new Joker cards, in a gunfight, you can reveal another card in your hand that the Joker will copy and then you play the Joker as that card (so you can keep the other card for later use). If you use it in a Poker hand it's used as...well...A Joker. Sadly, there is no way to toss this onto the table Maverick style for the full effect.

 A fistful of extras also adds six new Characters to the mix: Allan Pinkerton (Action: Choose a player within one space to show you their poker cards. That player must discard all cards of a value of your choice), Bat Masterson (At the start of your turn you may add or remove a bandit from any bandit hideout to move up to two spaces), Belle Starr (In a fight against a bandit, guard or the sheriff, decrease the value of the fight card played against you by two. After you win a fight against a bandit, you may choose to gain one wanted point instead), Buffalo Bill Cody (If you start your turn outside of town, gain one gold nugget), Isom Dart (If you start your turn with at least one cattle token, you may gain one additional action. If you do, you must discard all cattle tokens at the end of your turn), Pearl Hart (After you gain any number of Marshal or Wanted points on your turn, Draw one poker card and move up to two spaces). All of their unlockable actions are great, assuming you have the common sense to make sure Isom Dart sells his cattle before the end of his turn. You'll also find a set of Goal cards for each of the new characters. The Goal cards are listed as an optional rule in the base game but I highly suggest using them.

New Characters

You will also find some great new item cards. The Workhorse lets you carry two cattle tokens at a time and the six new named Peacekeeper Pistols (If you are a marshal, gain one additional Marshal point after you arrest a player or Wrangle. If you are wanted, gain one addtional wanted point after you rob a player or rustle). As you can imagine, combining these two makes a hell of a duo. The final item inclusion is six copies of the Holster (You may discard any number of poker cards to decrease the value of a card played against you by one for each poker card you discard this way). But, the holster generally never makes the cut of items that I am buying. Now, if they would make the holster pair with the gun slot so that it didn't take up an additional slot, I might be interested.

Goals and Not Goals...but still goals

Finally, Twenty Four new story cards are added. They are broken into four goals with six of each type: End your turn at a location outside of a town, Gain any number of Marshall points or Wanted points, Gain 2 or more LP from a single action, and spend $80 or more in a town with a single action. So, no real change to the basic goals, just some spice to what happens when you complete them.

A Fistful of Extras is a bit more expensive than the other Western Legends small expansions but with the miniatures and six new characters, I felt it was worth....a few dollars more.

Western Legends: A Fistful of Extras
A Fistful of Extras is a bit more expensive than the other Western Legends small expansions but with the miniatures and six new characters, I felt it was worth....a few dollars more.

I so wanted to like this game. I look at my overburdened shelf of movies and can pick out multiple examples of the Western genre, above and beyond the Man With No Name (who actually has a name in all three films) trilogy. But when I sat down to a game of it at U-Con a few years back, it just fell flat. It seemed like some characters were kind of locked into their respective role, ability-wise, but there were obvious other routes to take that were simply much more profitable, so I felt gimped within a couple turns. And, just like Merchants & Marauders, the risk level for being a bandit/pirate/bad guy was so much higher than simply being a merchant/cattle trader/card player that you'd avoid it barring a very few, specific circumstances.

I hear ya. That's why (unless someone insists on "following the rules") I just let everyone pick a character they want to play. My last game was a five player long game (Long game is too long at five but they wanted to try it). I took a White Hat route, Piper focused on mining, Quentin went full outlaw and Adam wanted to gamble. I ended up arresting Quentin four times and sicced the sheriff on him for a fifth arrest. I finished up in third with Piper in a tight second and Q winning by a single LP. Adam was a distant forth but he still had a blast just running around and trying everything in the game.
I can see how a game of WL could spin out badly but I don't think we have ever had a awful game.
