Cull or Collection? A Look Back at my Reviewed Games

Cull or Collection? A Look Back at my Reviewed Games
There Will Be Games

I've been reviewing board games at therewillbe.games since 2018. If Reddit is any indication, People seem to like list articles, hearing about culling, and telling me I'm wrong. So, I thought I would go over everything I have formally reviewed and see what still resides in my collection and if I have any regrets about the games I have culled.

The Fox in the Forest

Status: In Collection
Last Played: 2+ Years
Comment: A few years ago, I took a bunch of my small box games, tossed the boxes, and put the games into Photo boxes. This was one of them, so it's not something I can just decide to sell. I still like this game but the recent surge of great trick taking games has pushed this out of the limelight.

Doctor Who: Time of the Daleks

image

Status: In Collection
Last Played: 1+ years
Comment: Still enjoy playing this, I have a bunch of expansions...including one unopened one. Time (Ha!) to get this back to the table.

Bitten

Status: Culled
Regrets?: None.

Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats

image

Status: Culled
Regrets?: I never did remember to check if the mini's would work with Western Legends.
Comment: GF9 ended up putting additional stories in expansions (boo) and the only ones ever added to the site were fan created ones as part of a contest (aka we farmed out scenario creation to users).

Temporal Odyssey

Status: Culled
Regrets? Nope

Deathnote: Confrontation

image

Status: Culled
Regrets? I did cull this before my kid's hit their anime phase.

Seikatsu

Comment: Still my go-to for a 3-player game.

Sons of anarchy: Men of Mayhem

image

Status: In Collection

Comment: Didn't care for the re-theme of this, so this stays in my collection.

X-files: Conspiracy Theory

image

Status: Culled
Regrets?: Na-da

Lost Legacy: Fourth-chronicle and Rumpelstiltskin

Regrets? Zero

Professor Treasures Secret Sky Castle

Around The World in 80 Days

image

Status: Culled
Regrets: Not Really
Comments: Crowded Race-style game genre and dated mechanics meant this went bye-bye. I believe I gave it to a non-gamer family.

Masque of the Red Death

Status: Culled
Regrets: No

Black Fleet

Comments: Are you kidding? Still my favorite Pirate Game.

Shadow Strike Melee

Status: Culled
Regrets: None

Movable Type

Comments: I know this has been re-implemented but I never upgraded. My wife still digs this version.

Kemet Seth Expansion

image

Status: In Collection
Last Played: 2+ Years
Comments: Very hard to get to the table. If I have four or five players who want to play Kemet, we're more likely to just play Kemet. I probably need to make this an event game and set aside a evening to play it.

King of Tokyo King Kong

image

Status: In Collection
Last Played: 1+ month
Comments: Not my “Favorite” KOT character to play but I will occasionally get Kong out.

My Little Scythe

image

Status: In Collection
Last Played: 2+ years
Comments: My Niece and my kids pretty much aged out of this. Might be time to pass this on.

Wing it

image

Status: Culled
Regrets?: See Below
Comments: My daughter, Piper, loves this game. I gave it to her and it resides at her apartment at college.

Decrypto

image

Status: In Collection
Last Played: 6+ Months
Comments: Still my favorite Team-based “Guess the Word” game. Codenames is long gone but this stays.

Auztralia

image

Status: Culled
Regrets?: The last time we played this my wife said “You know, I think we are done with this game.” She hated the turn order mechanism. If I see pictures of it, I still kind of miss it. Great Game but as a co-op, we did kind of play it out...even with the expansions.

Divinity Derby

image

Status: In Collection
Last Played:

Comments: It might be a racing game and I have plenty of those but the shared hand mechanism along with the betting makes this a blast.

Euphoria

image

Status: Gone
Regrets?: I honestly don't know what happened to this. It's simply not with the rest of my collection. I still get requests to play it from my game group from time to time but when I go to my collection, it's still not there. I hope it's out there living it's best dystopian life.

The Pretender

The Expansion only goes in when everyone has played the game. So, it doesn't come out as much as the base game.

Wasteland Express Delivery Service

Comments: At some point I decided that Wasteland Express was too big, took too long to set-up, and ran a little long time wise.

This looks like a good place to end Part One. Let me know what you think!

Coolness. I should do this, as well, although I've probably done a lot more "deep dives" than direct reviews. In contrasting our collections, I'll say that I don't own a single one of these and the only one I've really wanted (or would want back) is Flamme Rouge. Thought about picking up Kemet: Seth at some point, but I feel like it changes the game too much from what it's supposed to be. I did have both expansions for Champions of Midgard but they, along with the base game, went away because it felt like it was way too much setup and fiddliness for what the gameplay actually offered. Also, you missed the perfect opportunity to link the appropriate meme to your comments on Stoner Parking Lot...

I just focused on games I reviewed via a formal review or discount dive.
I have articles on Kemet, the best ticket to ride, family card games, etc... being I said they were the best, of course they are still in my collection. I think this is about 30% of the reviews I have done.

I haven't played most of these games, but I did play Wasteland Express. One of my friends has a tendency to buy cool-looking games without checking reviews, so he got it because he loves anything post-apocalyptic. We played a four-player game that ran about 90 minutes too long. It was an okayish game, but needed more playtesting and fewer components.
