I actually don’t have anything to review this week. The tide has waned, at last. I’m not running on empty- I got a package from the fine folks at Stronghold containing their very awesome-looking Revolver and the very Citadels-looking Lost Temple.Both should be reviewed shortly- maybe even next week since they’re smaller titles and I can probably get in a bunch of plays between Hellfire Club and some home sessions. Destined Hero is coming up too.

I often wonder “why don’t board games sell like video games?” I know that there have been a few tabletop games that have sold a million or more copies (many of which took decades to do so) but none of them sell with the speed that video games do. Why not?

There's been a lot of talk lately about purchasing embargoes, about playing what we have, and about 'responsible' purchasing.  There's also the current US economic mess to consider.  So what's a gamer to do, when money's tight, shelf space is limited, and you're already drowning in a sea of games?

Trade, baby.  It's all about trading.

A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music... no, wait. A long, long time ago I did a short series of articles about wargaming but I planned one that I never actually got roud to writing about choosing good introductory wargames. This is actually a pretty serious omission in my view: although we've got quite a few experienced wargamers (more so than me) on this site, there's a lot of other people here who are quite clearly very interested in conflict games else they wouldn't be here - and it seems a shame that a perception of unapproachability might be stopping them from trying out some historicalconflict games as well. So, having even said as part of that short series that I was going to write a piece about introductory wargames, it's about time I got round to it. There's a reason why this is timely which we'll come on to later.

In a curious co-incidence, just as I was bemoaning a lack of proper wargames on the iPad, the wonderfully named Slitherine Software (apparently a subsidiary of the well-known digital wargames studio Matrix Games) released Battle Academy for the iPad. Eliciting howls of outrage over its $20 price tag, Matrix were good enough to give me a download code so I give you all the straight dope on whether or not the game is worth the money.

Finally, GW has produced a piece of dwarf - sorry, duardin - themed scenery. Fyreslayers got a very nice new update recently which included three Magmic Invocation models, and a Magmic Battleforge that provides a couple of interesting buffs to everyone's favourite flame-haired fanatics. I was really excited for this release and so set to painting the invocations and the forge as soon as I got them home. Since I wasn't overly keen on the example on the box for the forge (way too much gold) I decided to go with something that meshed more nicely with the colours of my army.
