If my comment was pushing you towards Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion and you want to be talked back from it, you should know that while I liked Jaws of the Lion WAY more than OG Gloomhaven, and while I had a lot of fun with it this summer with my wife...we've had more fun with plenty other games. It really is dungeon combat...and more dungeon combat...and more dungeon combat. Honestly, other than DungeonQuest (which doesn't really count), I don't think I've played a dungeoncrawl game that wasn't a bit of a slog. Silver Tower is I think the snappiest one I've played. But mostly I just get sick of attacking monsters and moving and attacking more monsters and getting treasure ad nauseam like I'm on a treadmill. Gloomhaven is 100% still like that in my opinion. Honestly, one of the things that I weirdly liked about Jaws of the Lion is...I don't WANT to be playing Gloomhaven for the next few years of my life like the big box wants me to be. 30-ish hours of my life spent playing Gloomhaven: JOTL seems like plenty.

Since Adel verpflichtet came up, I think I have to at least mention RoboRally. It has terrain and cool weapons. Also it's a race with lots of fighting. Warning: it might take a while to reach the perfect combination of rules, setup and options for your specific needs/to be fun.
BTW wasn't there a boardgame version of a popular computer game a couple of years ago, that maybe Mr. Barnes was raving about?
Edit: it was called 'Mechs vs. Minions'

I have and enjoy Roborally... hadn't really thought about playing it lately. It was one of my first purchases after Heroscape, since I was attracted by the designer as a former MtG kiddie. I've got the AH version with the extremely awkward sized box. I tend to prefer 1-board routes.

Pack of Heroes could be worth a look, easy to find for only five or six bucks and simple to play. It works on a tight grid with special rules that trigger on adjacencies or range so the spatial positioning and jockeying for territory is paramount. If you play with the mix-and-match rules you can also create some wild combos in your team.

man i love Roborally too. it can definitely outstay its welcome, but a lot of that is down to how you set up your track. also, aside from the bad component quality, i think the newest WOTC version of Robabrally is the best. the gameplay changes were smart pretty much across the board.

So I kind of followed all the advice and got my second box of Unmatched stuff (the original set with Alice, Arthur, Medusa, and Sinbad)- already played and enjoyed. Got Jaws of the Lion... punched and admired- girlfriend and I are cautiously optimistic. We both have played a bit of pokemon so I think the grindiness of it won't scare us off. Got Dragon and Flagon today at the local store that always seems to have every game. Gave her the elevator pitch and she loves the thought of it.
