Saw The Little Mermaid with my daughter today. What a perfect movie for Father’s Day. What a dad movie.

My lad came around for dinner, a chat, and watch some of his Amazon shows - that's good enough for me.
(I'd been playing a few games of Legendary Encounters: Alien that morning and two games of Nemesis the day before so didn't need him to join in any games, although I showed him my new Rallyman:Dirt and he seemed interested so maybe in the future ...)

My adult girls came over and we all went to lunch, and then they came home and played some Citadels with dad. It was great.

The nephew was over and he and the 6 year old opted to watch Onward, last night. That was a very apt metaphor for my current situation with my Dad, right now. I've had to grieve and accept his current cognitive decline, and also the physical complications that are cascading. He will most likely not survive the calendar year.

Had the usual goofy phone call with my Dad the last couple of days. 80% of his conversation these days is him inserting himself into the newspaper articles he's read that day, or him remembering work/trades he was involved with decades ago. He can still remember me, and we can still say that we love each other and miss each other and I am so grateful for that.

Thanks! Mine was low-key. My dad died a few years ago but I did my tradition of wishing him a Happy Father's Day in the group chat between my, my siblings, and my mom.

Then my wife and kid took me out to a baseball game (local summer college league, as my town isn't big enough for even single-A) and our team dominated. Go Crabs! A local brewery had some delicious cherry cider on tap so I drank those, and got a bit of a sunburn. A good day.

I took my father to Spain. We just got back this weekend. It was kind of an impulsive decision. He spent a summer in Spain and North Africa with my mom when they were first married. I grew up hearing his stories of midnight bullfights, drinking in "Gypsy" bars in the caves, and spending 12 hours at border control having his Triumph Spitfire (little two seater convertible) completely disassembled and searched because they thought he was trying to smuggle drugs in from North Africa. We didn't do anything near as exciting - just a lot of walking tours of different places. It will probably be the last trip of this sort that he takes, as walking as much as we did is getting difficult for him.

Other than my father's stories, El Grande and Alhambra, I knew nothing about Spain. Our tour guide was a professor of medieval Spanish literature. I confessed my ignorance to her and showed her a picture of the El Grande game board. She laughed and told me it was an appropriate map for our tour, and throughout the tour would point out for me were on the game board we were. We also visited the Alhambra and I saw that all the illustrations on the tiles in the game are actual things there, which was cool.

I now know a lot more about Spanish history and a bit more about my dad.
