The community is very helpful, so compared to other IT endeavors it was smooth sailing, and I didn't know shit about Android before, had just a little Windows and Linux experience
I have been using the OS for about two years now because it has a ton of anonymity features like TOR and IP cloaking built in (which I don't use) and is free, as in I don't pay with any personal data.
Feels great, actually. Like not being watched anymore.
Would be glad to answer any questions if someone is interested in getting away, too.

Can you compare e/OS to GrapheneOS? I've heard good things about the latter (from a privacy standpoint) but don't have any experience with it yet.

No, sorry, haven't tried anything else (yet). I chose e/OS because of a personal recommendation of an acquaintance.

That said, Graphene seems to be more comprehensive and further developed overall, at least if you believe the Graphene community:
discuss.grapheneos.org/d/9399-biggest-di...s-eos-and-grapheneos

The thread mentions it only runs on Pixels, but I find I like these. e/OS seems to support a lot of Samsung models.

Edit: damn, now I can't stop thinking about Graphene. It looks like quite the rabbit hole. Let's find out how hard that is to install, shall we?

I bought a Thinkpad T440P for twenty bucks at the campus surplus sale. Now it has a new cmos battery, regular battery, and a new hard drive. After installing Lubuntu, this 2014 machine runs pretty fast. It weights about 10 lbs.
