Thanks for the bone tomahawk review, I've been meaning to see it.

I haven't seen it, but, that's disappointing because I wanted to see it. My Tai Chi instructor did some of the stunt work on that film.

Saw "San Andreas". Very predictable but entertaining. The wife actually let out a couple screams and gasps, so it did a good job.

Still, they were mad at me because I was calling out (literally) the timing and exact next crisis very often, and was right every time. I mean, utterly predictable.

Steve Jobs: The structure is very contrived, with the same people and issues escalating around Jobs' three different product launches, but it gives the whole thing a nice poetic kind of narrative, which fits good with Sorkin's dialogue. A bit exhausting to keep up with in that sense. This is much more stylized and mythologized than the last Jobs movie (with Ashton Kutcher), but according to Steve Wozniak, this version is less accurate as far as details, but much more accurate emotionally/conceptually, and I can see where that would be the case. Fassbender is great as Jobs, and I thought Kate Winslet was really great in her role as his PR manager (some accent fluctuation notwithstanding). (8/10)

Crimson Peak: I liked it as a Gothic drama suspense story (definitely not a horror film). It's visually rich in its sets and costumes (though the CGI ghosts weren't the best), but it is kind of light on its story and mystery. Would have made an amazing BBC series, but a little underwhelming as a feature film. (6.5/10)

Room: Barney, this is a must-see for you. Well, for everyone, really, but knowing your tastes, I think you'll especially love this. A 5 year-old boy and his mother live in a room, and never leave there. She was abducted 7 years prior and has told the kid that their room is the only thing that's real in the world. It's not a spoiler to say that they do get out (that is shown in the trailer), and the second half of the film is about how they adjust to life in the actual real world. There are some very powerful and moving moments in that part, especially, as we see the world at large through the kid's new understanding, and also how he misses his "room," and how the mother and their family has trouble dealing with their new freedom. It's very manipulative, and I think the means of their escape is dumb and unlikely to have worked as depicted, but that is just a dumb plot point in a movie that otherwise has some wonderful things to say about life and parenthood and innocence and sacrifice. Oscar nom for Brie Larson, I'm guessing, and maybe even for the kid. (9.5/10)

I saw Re-animator. Amazing that I had never seen it before... I still don't know why Lovecraft's name is attached because it certainly wasn't very Lovecraftian....

But if you want a funny bad horror film, you could do worse.

You couldn't pay me to see Steve Jobs. I already did my time with The Social Network and that was plenty.

It's absolutely Lovecraftian, since the story was precisely about the main character and the plot is roughly the same.

Re-Animator was clearly based on an H.P. Lovecraft short story called Herbert West, Re-Animator. However the tone of the movie was quite different. Lovecraft didn't write dark comedy or slapstick, and the story definitely didn't include a rape scene.

Grud, thanks for the recommendation! As it happens I just saw a poster for ROOM in the subway this morning, weird timing. Is it in French? Did you see it with subtitles?

If they nail the scenes right where the kid sees the outside for the first time (sky, animals, cars), they could really have something special on their hands.

i think that movie is gonna make me melt :(

Really like Macy and Joan Allen too. Cool cast.

Still in the swing of things for Halloween / Fall...so lots of horror flicks.

Cellar Dweller - So I'm sort of infamous for inviting friends over and subjecting them to really shitty horror films. I hadn't done it in a while, but last week I struck again! Cellar Dweller is a real dumb, cheap crappy film by Empire International Pictures (Charles Band's company before Full Moon). I believe it's based on an old EC comicbook. The plot is that a cartoonist (Jeffrey Combs) is is creating a horror comic while fondling a Necronomicon...bad things ensue. The monster he draws comes to life and kills him. 30 years later his house is turned into an Art School and some lady decides to follow in this guys life work. Which means she finds his copy of the Necronomicon and starts summon the monster inadvertently again. The movie is sooooooooooooooo bad. But holy hell, is it funny with a group of friends. If you love trashy films you'll enjoy yourself. Lots of boobs, a cool monster, some blood and lots of bad acting. They actually made a Tales from the Crypt episode based on this same premise called, Korman's Calamity. We watched that as well. I love friggin Tales from the Crypt.

Curse of Frankenstein - I love me some Hammer Horror and this is upper echelon Hammer. Peter Cushing plays a great Frankenstein...he pulls off that obsessed madman perfectly. Christopher Lee as "The Creature" has some really great makeup that is really quite a haunting visage. Lee doesn't have a whole heck of alot to do, as Cushing is the real monster in the film. Great stuff.

Shaun of the Dead - I haven't seen this one in a while and I was surprised that it still holds up. It's amazing that this is essentially a parody of the zombie genre, but manages to become one of the greats. It lampoons so many of the genre's cliches, but it does so in such a clever way that is more paying homage instead of just going for yuks. Great characters, funny lines and tons of memorable scenes make this one a zombie classic.

The Changeling - I took Josh Look's advice and finally conquered my fear of this film. I'm really glad I did because it's amazing. How does this film not get discussed more? It has an interesting plot, GREAT acting and is genuinely frightening. I can't count how many times I got shivers down my spine while watching this movie. It really creeped me out. That seance scene was terrifying. The house and what happened there...totally chilling. Man, it's just an incredibly well made film. My wife loved it and I did too. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for legitimately great horror.

I'll definitely read that later. It must have just been the overall tone of the movie that made me think they just slapped his name on it because he wouldn't write something like that movie.

Pixels! We rented it on Friday night from Redbox for a mere $1.49, significantly cheaper than the $5.99 being extorted by the likes of Verizon and Amazon.

Ain't winning any Oscars, but there were times I was busting out laughing. As best I can tell a movie made for someone my age, and the references to the old video games I played were spot on. I ended up having a debate with my boys about the primary difference between games then and games now.

Re-Animator was directed by Stuart Gordon. His next movie was a similar treatment of a Lovecraft story, From Beyond. If you like one, you will probably like the other.

that's cool. I think at $1.49 it's about a thousand dollars too expensive for that, but if it caused a conversation, that's always a good thing.

Speaking of which, okay Grud, you've convinced me. Room is my number one movie to watch (it's bumping Jafar Panahi's Taxi and The Second Mother down on my must-see list). I'm working out a date to see it next week, then go to some kick-ass new restaurant after just to talk about it together. Sounds awesome. Thanks a ton for making me aware of it.

There was a part in it where they blared Loverboy music and I thought of you.
