@Kingput

I'd recommend trading for a Deluxe Edition Twilight Struggle. There are a ton of people looking to trade mint copies on BGG, and I prefer trading a game I don't play for a 2nd copy of one I play a lot.

Origins: How We Became Human/American Megafauna is selling for like 200+ dollars on BGG listings. WTF?

Anyone want to trade it for a Star Wars Armada lot? :)

I'm still in the No-Buy Zone, but a preorder from back in October finally came in. I got Theseus: Hunters, Pax Pamir, and El Grande Big Box.

Trying to get Pax Pamir played as soon as Wednesday. I would love a version of Pax Porfiriana that isn't inscrutable. Already I've opened it and seen that the rulebook actually attempts to teach the game and doesn't look like someone's "manifesto" (there doesn't seem to be anything in the rulebook telling me that the books of Ayn Rand are high quality thought and literature), and the cards look like they were actually designed for playing a game. So we're already a jump ahead. I love Pax Porfiriana, but it's tough to get it played as is.

I am super glad to finally own El Grande but not stoked to have this edition. I don't care about the expansions, I don't know anyone who's ever had anything great to say about them, and I can't imagine a world where they're needed. El Grande is fine as is and doesn't need a bunch of fuckery bloating up the box. I would seriously trade this for an old copy of just the base game. But I'm still glad to have it at hand.

I have the Decennial Edition, with a couple of expansions. We've played them occasionally, but I see them as bolt-on chrome to a game that already glimmers in the sunlight like a pimped-out Panhead.

Spoke too soon. Most games with a colonial theme would maybe just hope the subject doesn't come up. Ol' Phil puts in an appendix about how really, British Colonialism was the bomb-diggity for everyone involved.

Gary Sax wrote: Ok, this is driving me crazy. I want to counter some negativity with regard to Twilight Struggle Collector's Edition. Yes, the minis are little plastic bits, but they are pretty much what I figured they'd be (as described). Yes, there's also the misprint on Brush War, which is the main thing I have an actual problem with.

But forget the box (super cool) and the new kickstarter stuff. The art has seen an upgrade. Not just a little one. First, the art part of it extremely nice, much more consistent, on both the board and card backs. But I have not seen anyone mention just what a huge upgrade the actual individualized pictures on the cards got. Basically whomever the new art director was went through all the cards and made the colors really nice and period, with a black and white period tinge. Most importantly, I just finished sleeving all the cards and whomever the art director was picked out a huge number of new pictures for many cards when they were lacking. Whoever it was knew what the fuck they were doing, in almost every single case they upgraded to a much superior picture. Sometime just a (usually B+W) photo with a visibly better composition of the same subject (e.g. Portuguese Empire Crumbles). But in many cases, they changed pictures entirely and the results are stunning and SO much more evocative of the cold war. They got rid of the average graphics wherever they were and in almost every case replaced them with better period photography. Compare the new Missile Envy photo composition, for example, to the old cheesy Missile Envy clipartish thing. The cards are HUGELY upgraded. They even left the iconic photos that couldn't be changed; I mean, how could you choose a better photo for "We will bury you?"

I'm probably especially sensitive to this because I just finished a long history of postwar Europe, but I can't believe no one has been talking about how good some of these changes are. The photography choices are awesome.

there are 5 cards with errors but they say they will correct these and send them out. I personally dont like all the new art on the card fronts, but the backs are awesome. Also I am getting my copy from Thirstyman so i am not complaining at that christmas present! GMT sent the box to the UK to avoid import charges but obviously the Swedish authorities are too smart for that shit since I got a letter today saying its on its way to me and there will be some customs import charges.
The map looks nice, the box is awesome even if I might add a Little thing on the hinge to stop it wanging open all the way. I dont THINK I will prefer the markers/cubes but its hard to say until it gets tried.
The minis look shit though, come on. I Think its one of those weird things where even though what you get for the Money (especially in my case :) is AWESOME, it just feels like if theyd just made it a Little bit more expensive and just "done it right", but I expect they lost more Money than they realised so that 125 dollars was already not great for them including the shipping and other stuff. So 145 wouldnt have made it right, because maybe they really needed 175 already PLUS more to do the other bits.

I dont know, but it says a lot when a lot of owners are already looking at "pimping" their sets with better minis. And they used the pimped dice that have symbols on the 1 not the 6? Good job I already have both kinds :)

Its a fantastic value for Money premium upgrade and they will fix most of the issues anyway, but I Think it would be like if you bought the thousands of dollars war of the ring and one of the figures was a heroclix wizard and one of the map areas was spelled wrong and some of the cards had errors. it would be weird, I Think its the same here. i actually dont understand how they fucked up Brush War but obviously whatever method they used to create the cards didnt involve using the old cards! (some also have missing remove after played asterisk text as well I Think).

Not seeing much about the expansion stuff and the turn zero what if, that seems like it could be really interesting but have not seen it yet.

I'll update when mine lands on the doorstep!

I wont be Selling my deluxe version though, and I still have an extra board and cards marked to the late war scenario but I keep meaning to buy an older edition to have thatin a box too to whip out directly (I've Pandemic Legacied the board and stuff).

Shoot me a mail if you want a preview of the turn zero stuff Pete (and we should probably get a game going again soon, I played against Matt Thrower a while back and battered him both times (once for each side), but you gave me a pretty thorough pasting so I should use you as a training partner)

I like the games he makes as a general principle (though Greenland was fucking shit), but he does seem a bit of a dipshit, on his website he goes on about how intelligent you need to be to play high Frontier, confusing overly wrought detailed simulation models (of one of the most basic and well understood sciences, you know, theres a joke within the scientific Community about things being as 'easy as rocket science' for a reason) with intelligence and failing to mention that there are also times when the entire sum of your game progress will hinge on the roll of a d6 (I've no problem with that, but get off the pompous ooo Im so smart high horse).

Looking forward to trying Pax Porfiriana soon though.

From what I'm seeing I have a very nice set in terms of how it got to me---I had no broken pieces, the box was in perfect shape, etc. So I understand those complaints a little better now than I did when I wrote that original post. But I still don't really have any problem with the plastic pieces they provided (particularly the space race and defcon marker, I think most people's criticism must be about the tanks) and counting cubes has proven to be much easier for counting who has control on a practical level.

Interestingly, I said this on Twitter and got a reply from Cole Wehrle:

"Believe me, it was a subject of much debate. Check the Pamir forums for the directors cut."

"Our disagreements got pushed into odd places-see my biblo note vs essay. The game itself tells a v different story of empire."

Coincidentally, I was watching a Milton Friedman forum from the 80's today, and one of the subjects was how shitty a deal colonialism was for every nation, ever. Colonial powers always had a net economic loss, apparently.

I've had the Decennial Edition for about ten years and we haven't punched the expansions yet. The original concept is so fundamentally sound that no one in my group, and I've likely played with 12 different guys, has ever said "let's try one of the expansions". Just hasn't come up. As far as I'm concerned this is one of maybe three or four games that I would not change a single detail on.

Stopped into a game store in Portland and found Target Earth there. I wanted that so bad back in like 2010, but it had no real US distribution. Still has good reports and reviews, though, so I'll give it a shot. It's a co-op XCOM type game.
