It was going to be a real spectacle. The crowds had gathered to watch the masters at work and battle to the bitter end. Only one of them would survive. I feel a bit silly asking for such a simple game, but are you sure you got the rules right? You never select how many dice to roll; the only time you roll more than 1 is when you have to go 'all in' because the arena is empty.

Thank you, qwertymartin. It does look like I got the rules wrong. I thought you could always decide to roll more than once dice, depending on how wreckless you felt at the time. However, the rules indeed speak of a single dice.
