Turning the Wingspan Formula on it's Ear: A Finspan Board Game Review

When I say that Finspan turns the Wingspan formula on...

I have played plenty of Wingspan (Speaking as one of the married Boardgamers whose wife adores the game). After 20+ games a year for the last few years, I more than welcomed a change in location and fauna. And, while I think that alone would have been enough for me to be interested in picking up Finspan, I was pleasantly surprised by all of the positive changes to the Wingspan formula.

Excellent. Welcome back. Tell me about interactivity. My main complaint about Wingspan is that it's multiplayer solitaire. It's perfectly possible to play an entire game without speaking to the other people around the table because you don't interact with their tableaus and they can't affect yours, either (This is aside from the classic "egg problem" where eggs were the guaranteed winning strategy at all times (I know later expansions adjusted for that.)) The reason I like engine builders like 51st State is that they give you opportunities to directly affect your opponents (razing) so that you're actually competing with them in the game and not just in the race to complete your puzzle first. Does Finspan have the same qualities?

Well, there are actions that are "When you trigger this, everyone place a egg in this region" So, it has that type of interaction, And you want to pay attention to what other players have done so that they CAN'T take advantage when you trigger it. If they just filled all Twilight region fish with eggs and you trigger an "all twilight fish lay an egg for all players", they literally can't take advantage of it.
But mostly it is still multilayer solitaire, you are not directly interacting with their Tableau by eating their fish or anything. Also, all of the end of Turn goals are friendly, so your not going to really deny someone scoring. It's definitely leaner not meaner.

OK. Is Wyrmspan any different (if you've tried it)? I thought maybe the theming of dragons might lead to more aggressive options in play, but if they're sticking to formula, probably not.

Only one game in on Wyrmspan and I was learning/teaching 4 new people. So, I didn't really delve into the nuances. Review coming once I get a few more plays but nothing jumped out as anything that added a bunch more interactions.

I mean from the publisher’s standpoint, if it ain't broke, don’t fix it. So it doesn’t surprise me re lack of interaction.
