Sneak Peek of Official Reprint of Dune from Gale Force Nine

Dune board game

There Will Be Games
Today at GAMA, Gale Force Nine revealed a sneak peek of their upcoming reprint of the board game classic Dune.

Back in August, Gale Force Nine(GF9) announced that they had reached a multi-year licensing agreement with Legendary Entertainment and Herbert Properties, LLC to bring the expansive Dune sci-fi franchise to tabletop gaming, with plans to release several products, including board and miniatures games, just prior to the upcoming Dune theatrical release in 2020. However, there was no confirmation at that time that they had plans to reprint the classic Dune board game. Today’s sneak peek confirms the rumors that we will be getting a reprint of this much admired, long out-of-print,  and difficult to find game that is a holy grail for many boardgamers.

Update March 15, 2019:

Original co-designers Peter Olotka and Bill Eberle have confirmed this news, with Mr Olotka saying on Twitter, “Yup DUNE returns better than ever.” Mr. Eberle has told us that the original designers are working on this project.

Update March 21, 2019:

Gale Force Nine's John-Paul Brisigotti confirmed this news on Game Trade Media, and said that the "classic game will be out in the summer, probably in August."

And I'll have to wait for blue moons these days before I may get a table of six :(

Oh man, and it’s the Ilya design. Great choice.

Oh, good. My Avalon Hill copy is starting to smell weird.

This better come with all six factions in the base box, though.

Can't wait to see the official rules--I wonder which version will be the new "canon."

If they follow the Star Trek Ascendancy release pattern we can expect the base game in 2021, the 5th player expansion in 2025, and the 6th player expansion in 10191 AG.

Whoa! Fantastic news!

I love my Ilya set, but I would pay good money to have a rewritten, clarified, and edited rulebook.

Jonathan, why am I imagining you halfway up a rock when your phone suddenly "pings" you with a "Fear is the Mind Killer" MIDI.

Yeah, what a shocker...it takes a lot for a game announcement to impress me anymore.

Are they really using the Ilya art, I wonder?

Or was that just for demonstration purposes?

These words and Gale Force 9 do not go together, unfortunately.

I feel like component-wise my Ilya PnP will be as good if not better than theirs? As much as I love the game, hopefully there is a reason for me to pick it up. It BETTER have combat wheels.

Yeah, I'd be fairly reluctant if I had a solid PnP copy. Mine is from the 70s and kinda looks it. The screens still have gloss on them, but the cards are totally faded, the combat wheels have some yellowing spots, and the box is in rough shape. I'm also missing a couple troop counters. So, I'm interested in this solely for the component upgrade value, but people will lose their minds if they mess with the rules (see: Rex), so if your copy is already in good shape, why bother?

It does bring to mind some question about just how much GF9 shelled out for the license, though, given the Herbert estate's fairly extreme obstinacy in the past. Was part of the license agreement a determination to not make any changes? I can't see how that would matter to anyone but the original designers. I wonder if GF9 will be looping in Eberle and Co. like FFG did? Given the rare number of times I can actually get six people for a game, I'm more intrigued by the mention of "other products" at the moment. But I've never been quite as wowed by Dune as most here.

Am I the only one disappointed there won't be cards with a pouty Timothée Chalamet on them?

We are super stoked to be able to bring our original DUNE board game back better than ever! Yes it will have the wheels - after all "wheels within wheels" is at the heart of DUNE and the heart of the game. Traitors lurking, special abilities that map to the six major factions - get ready for some great gaming.

And the original designers are still alive and kicking . . . and working on this project.

Overall this is a pretty great thing, but it'll take a light touch. This is the sort of game where updating has real danger of unraveling what makes it so great in the first place.

I'll be really fascinated to see how they go about writing the rules. The original ruleset is a little like holy scripture, in that there seem to be a lot of different ways to interpret it and a lot of people care a whole bunch.

I doubt they are using the Ilya design, though it is very attractive. It was probably just a handy graphic that didn't suggest an exactly identical reprint of the original game.

Are you working on the game with GF9?
