There Will Be Games

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania December 10, 2012 – Shenandoah Studio will release their first offering, Battle of the Bulge, for the Apple iPad and iPad Mini this Thursday, December 13th. Conceived by award-winning game designer John Butterfield, Battle of the Bulge is the first of its kind on iPad: a serious wargame and simulation, based upon the best design practices and traditions of board wargaming, married with the iPad’s intuitive touch-based user interface. Mobile gamers can play on their own against cunning computer opponents, online with friends, or “pass the pad” face-to-face. The game’s turn-based structure, combined with Apple’s GameCenter, allows players to receive turns from their opponents and send them back in their own time, playing when their schedule allows. Gamers will be able to play a serious wargame, however and whenever they want.

Battle of the Bulge simulates Hitler’s last gamble: an offensive to crack the Allied lines in December, 1944. A surprise attack, countered by a desperate defense, culminates in broad counterstrokes. Pieces represent actual military units fighting on the terrain of the famous World War II battle. The game includes two scenarios, a short introduction that takes players through the opening days of the attack in half an hour, as well as a longer campaign that shows the ebb and flow of the battle as well as the rich strategic choices available to each side. While battle is never certain, players who can put themselves “in the shoes” of an Allied or Axis commander will find that careful planning and preparation pay off. The game includes a tutorial, full rules, and links to online forums to help new players learn the game, as well as historical commentary and day-to-day narratives that provide historical context for in-game events.

Battle of the Bulge first drew attention through a Kickstarter campaign in May, 2012. Eleven hundred fans backed the project, raising twice the amount requested. In response to this demand additional games using the same rules are in development for 2013, beginning with El Alamein, covering the decisive battle in North Africa. Stay tuned for more games from Shenandoah Studio, veteran game designer Eric Lee Smith’s venture to put top quality strategy games on the iPad. Shenandoah’s team of designers, developers, and artists collectively bring 160 years of experience to the enterprise.

The game will run on all versions of the Apple iPad, as well as the iPad Mini, and will be priced at $9.99. It will be available in the App Store this Thursday, December 13, 2012.
