There Will Be Games

Remember Ridley Scott's Alien?

A movie with the infamous scene where John Hurt convulses around until a creature bursts out of his chest, spraying the bewildered crew with gore as they look on in horror? Ravensburger has a new family board game based on that movie. Josh and Al talk about why Alien: Fate of the Nostromo works better than it should and what it means to really be a horror game.

There Will Be Games

Josh Look (He/Him)
Podcaster

One night during the summer of 1997, Josh Look's cool uncle who owned a comic shop taught him how to play Magic the Gathering. The game set off his imagination in a way that he could not sleep that night, and he's been fascinated by games ever since. He spent many afternoons during his high school years skipping homework to play Dungeons & Dragons and paint Warhammer minatures, going on to discover hobby board games in his early 20s. He's been a writer for ThereWillBe.Games and is the creator and co-host of the geek culture podcast, The Wolfman's Lounge. He enjoys games that encourage a heavy amount of table talk and those that explore their themes beyond just their settings.

So, you all know I've been out of the loop but what happened with the podcast? I'm listening to past episodes on spotify and they are so, so good!

I don't listen to podcasts or audiobooks because I like to receive information more quickly. If there was a transcript for a typical one-hour podcast, I could probably read it in less than 10 minutes.

COVID happened. And now Josh is working on getting his masters degree, while working and being a dad.

Josh is currently enthused about Horrified: D & D, and the upcoming Camp Grizzly Kickstarter.

Al is still laughing.

Barnes is now focusing on guitars and music. I actually haven't heard from him in a long time. He just kind of departed without a word.

Michael was writing a regular column on Lorcana at Goonhammer. Not sure if that's still happening.

It's a shame. I really love that guy, and it's a shame he Irish goodbyed everyone

I sometimes do the Irish goodbye, because the local alternative is the Minnesota goodbye, which can take more than a half hour sometimes. In the more extreme cases, the Minnesotans follow you out to your car and keep talking at you.

Maybe we could lure Barnes back into the hobby by getting him to try Rock Hard: 1977.

Yes he’s still doing Goonhammer columns.

Ah, he fell into a lifestyle game. I've gone through those phases in the past. It's sort of like when a friend starts dating someone new and they get obsessed with each other and suddenly that friend vanishes from the face of the earth, only to reappear months or years later when the relationship is over.

He's occasionally posting about boardgames (and music) on BlueSky under @displacermb.
